The Grapevine is a weekly column that has appeared in local newspaper publications in excess of 16 years. It originated as a publication of information for the West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival. In the early days it served to inform the readers of all that was happening with the festival. After the festival was over each year it brought to the readers all things Italian such as recipes, customs and other events being held both here and in Italy. After my retirement I took the Grapevine with me and expanded its content too all local interests. The Grapevine was published inthe Shinnston News and Harrison County Journal, The Taylor County Value Guide and in The Extra a publication from the Clarksburg Publishing Company (Exponent Telegram).
I'm sad to announce that the Grapevine will no longer appear in the Extra. For all of you dedicated readers I hope that you will continue to read the Grapevine when it appears in The Shinnston News, The Taylor County Value Guide or online at Connect-Clarksburg.com and Connect-Bridgeport.com. I can truly say that over the past 16 years I have had only two complaints about the column. I am sure there may have been more, but I was not made aware of them. Last week I was contacted seven times about those of you who were no longer receiving the Grapevine. I was not made aware that it was not appearing in the Extra.
I know that change is hard but I hope you will look for alternate ways to enjoy the Grapevine every week. You will never know the joy that I get from preparing this column for you and from hearing from you The Grapevine has readers from almost every part of West Virginia, from New York, Florida, Virginia, Texas, South and North Carolina and many other states and even from Italy. If you have any further questions please feel free to contact me at spanishqueen86@aol.com or at 304 842 2662.
While having our weekly family breakfast at the FOP after mass, we ran into the Ayoobs who were accompanied by Genevieve Cunningham and her brother Fred Hikel. Genevieve lives in Nutter Fort and Fred lives in Baltimore and Florida. Fred was here to observe his sister's 85 birthday. How rewarding it was to me when were were leaving to hear them say how much they enjoy this column. By the way, happy birthday to Genevieve and to Mary K. Turner, Alexis Scott, Kathy Morrison, Renaa Torcia, Mary J. Flaherty, Waken Simon, especially to my niece, Bridget Smith Cann. and to all you July babies.
I am looking for a solution to a problem that we have encountered in our garden. It seems that a lot of our leaves on our tomato plants are turning yellow. If anyone has a solution please contact us as we are afraid we may lose our entire crop. Dave has tried Epsom salts but to date it does not appear to be helping. Oh the joy of preparing minestra with fresh Swiss chard and making a tiela with fresh zucchini. Both of these recipes are in my cookbook, Arrivederci is available at James and Law and at Tomorrows Bakery. There has been a resurgence of purchasing the book, especially since the Goldenseal's articles on mushrooms. I hope that most of you mushroom hunters were able to get a copy of Goldenseal. I was just made aware that Grit has a month magazine. Many of you, as I do, will remember the oldGrit newspaper. Well the magazine is just as good and has a wealth of information including many recipes. This month it had the recipe using crackers to make an apple pie. I know I made this as a teenager many moons ago. I think we are going to have a bumper crop of apples,, pears and peaches, Get out your favorite recipes and be ready to preserve some for winter.
As I close this week I truly want to thank all you readers and hope that you will pass along this information to those who may have received this column and cannot understand why they are not getting it any longer. I truly appreciate your continued support. Keep in touch, enjoy the summer and be careful if you are planning a vacation. Until next week "Now You Have Heard It through The Grapevine."
