I hope you were not one of those individuals who said there was nothing to do this weekend. This area was just hopping with events and I must say they were all wonderful.
On Thursday I received an email from Susan Capicotto Nichols inviting me to the play "Holy Cannoli" which was being presented at the Friedlander Center by Act 2 Theatre Co. First let me tell you about Susan, I met her at the Veterans' Dinner held at the Bridgeport Conference Center a while back. She sat at our table and we had a lovely conversation about our Italian heritage. Her father came to America from Calabria. Sharing our Italian heritage, Susan thought I might especially enjoy this play. I called up my son Mike and we decided to attend it,. It played to a full house and I give the cast a very high rating on their presentation. They really captured the typical Italian family. This was the Susan's directing debut and she did a fantastic job. The cast included Lindsay Morgan, Shawn Rogers, Deb Sambol, Doug Seckman, Jessica LeMasters, Mark Ford and Hunter Riley. At intermission they served canoli and wine and cheese. We spent a wonderful evening full of laughter. I hope that we might be able to make arrangements to present it again during festival. MaryKay Lindsay was there and she reminded me that her business Gourmet Catering is now open on Thursday and Friday evenings for dinner. If you have not visited her place now is the time to make plans.
Clarksburg Uptown presented the Summer Jazz Stroll on Friday. What a wonderful event they presented and everyone in the area had the opportunity to enjoy some really good jazz. We had reservations at the Uptown Seafood Restaurant. My good friend Ken moved here from Parsons and his seafood buffet is excellent. All the crab legs you can eat along with the best crab cakes around and many other seafood dishes. Please stop by and patronize him as he needs business to continue to keep the place open. He is open for lunch and dinner. Julian Hipkins was the entertainer presenting jazz vocal backed up by a great band. You could imagine you were listening to Sammy Davis Jr. That is how good he was. Dusty Spelsburg and I agreed it was hard not to get up and dance especially to Georgia. There were five other locations in Uptown Clarksburg presenting Jazz and I understand that they all had good attendance. Kudos to the planners of this event.
We capped off our weekend with a visit to Coalton, WV. For their Coalton Days Fair,. Mike Ross is probably one of the most famous people who live in Coalton and he really treats all of his friends from throughout West Virginia to a wonderful meal and entertainment. Our accordion players, Ott and Sam, were there as was a band with an Elvis impersonator. There was a merry go round and a Ferris wheel for the kiddies. Thanks to the Coalton organizers and to Mike Ross for this event. I would say that several thousand attended.
Sunday was a good day to stay at home and recuperate from a great weekend. Now I am wondering what I will be doing next week. My brother Bill and his wife Danni will be here and I know that always means a great lunch at Julio's.
I have had my first tiala of the summer and I will have to tell you, that although I did not make it, it was delicious. My good friend, Jo Ellen Crowley made it and sent a dish over to us. She does not use tomato in her tiala but this is certainly a great variation of this popular dish. Soon we will have zucchini coming out of our ears but be sure to dig out your recipes and if nothing else, grate it and put it in the freezer for zucchini bread this fall. Measure it in two cup portions and it will be ready to add to the recipe.
I spent last Monday at Ruby Hospital with my daughter, Leslie who had surgery on her foot. She is doing well, but it was a very painful surgery and the recovery time is long. Dixon is taking great care of her. My thoughts and prayers to Joe Oliveto and his family as he battles his current illness.
I was saddened by the loss of Josephine Oliverio. Out of this large family, there is now two boys left, John and Bob. She trained me how to be a good waitress at Minards while I was still in high school. The Oliverio family was such an integral part of our East View family.
If you are traveling be safe, keep in touch with me and until next week "Now You Have Heard It through The Grapevine."
