The Grapevine: The Monuments Men

By Rosalyn Queen on March 04, 2014 from The Grapevine

There was a famous president who once said "Here you go again" and I think the same could apply to the snow.  Just when we thought it was getting warmer the snow came again yesterday.  There is just one lesson to be learned here and that is that we are not in charge of the weather. Spring will come when it gets good and ready.

So now we must continue to look for things to do to keep us from getting those winter blues.  This past week Dave and I joined my sister and brother-in-law, Cathy and Dan Fisher, and went to the movies.  We saw The Monument Men. I was truly impressed by the acting, especially George Clooney.  I  had  no idea what the movie was about, but after sitting there just a few minutes I found out.  Monument Men was about the war in Europe and about all the famous paintings and statues that Hitler had confiscated.  It was a wonderfully told true story.  There is just one thing that it brought a back to me and that was all the atrocities that were done to the Jewish people.  For many years I have not been able to accept this and I cannot find any answer why any person would participate in such actions.  I have visited Washington D. C. at least 30 times and have not been able to visit the Holocaust Museum.  I purchased the video Schindler's List and have not been able to watch it. To know that this really happened devastates me. I often wonder if history could ever repeat itself.  I certainly hope not and I pray those bigger than me have taken steps to assure that it will never happen again.

There are several good movies out right now and I hope that you will take advantage of this terrible weather and spend an afternoon at the movies.  By the way for all my senior friends, you get a senior discount all day and it will only cost you $5.50, even in the evening.  Another movie that is getting a lot of hype is the Son of God. It would be a great way to spend an afternoon, especially during the season of Lent. Lets keep busy. "Spring is on its way."

If you live in the Grafton area or want to make a trip up there I encourage you to attend mass at the Catholic church there.  I have learned that the priest there has a wonderful voice and it is worth the trip just to hear him sing.  This past week he had an hour concert prior to the service and he even writes some  of his own songs. Call his office to find out the times.

This past week marked the beginning of Lent as we observed Ash Wednesday. With the  beginning of Lent we might shed some thought on how we can make some personal goals  to make us more aware of those less fortunate than we are.  We might try to attend church services more often during the week or we might consider visiting the sick or those confined to nursing homes or even reading the bible on a daily basis. Of course, there is nothing wrong with doing it the "old fashion way" and that is giving up candy, quit smoking, quit consuming so many soft drinks or even quit going to the gambling halls. I think that deep down inside this really teaches us about abstinence and that is what Lent is about. Set a goal to be a  better person this Lenten Season.

You know I just could not complete this column without talking about food.  We have had a lot of those cold winter dishes such as beef stew, vegetable soup, chicken soup and today I am fixing a pot of cabbage with ham and potatoes.  The only bad thing about these dishes is that I cannot consume them without a lot of bread, but like the bear when I come out of hibernation, my goal will be to do some exercise and try to lose some weight. If you are getting tired of eating pasta, why not try a rice dish?

Cook 1 1/2 cups rice, drain it and add 1/4 cup of pesto which you can prepare with your blender.  Add about 4 ounces of diced mozzarella cheese and mix well.  Season with salt and serve with your favorite broiled fish.

Keep warm, keep in touch at 304 842 2662 and until next week Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.
