The Grapevine: Young Entrepreneurs and Pumpkins

By Rosalyn Queen on September 28, 2023 from The Grapevine

Two of the youngest entrepreneurs in the area, Cody and Dakota Crites, were at the Clarksburg Farmers Market selling their produce, especially their pumpkins for fall eating or for decorating.

Kody and Dakota live with their parents on a 60-acre farm in Philippi.  Not only do they raise a variety of fruits and vegetables, but they also tend to cattle, goats, donkeys, and chickens. Recently they showed eggs at their Hodgeville 4H competitions.

The boys who are home schooled by their mother continue to be active in the community and at their church. The boys stay very active on the farm, tilling, planting, and even erecting an electric fence to keep the deer out of their garden.  If the season is dry the boys have the task of watering the plants.

When speaking about their finances, they take guidance from their parents.  The money they make goes into savings and is used for special activities but is hopefully kept for the future.  One of the best years for the boys showed an income of about $750.00.   They also are adamant about helping others and can be found at their church donating pumpkins to those who might not be able to purchase one.

When asked what the future might hold for them Kody, who is 13, will tell you he has not decided yet but had a few careers in mind.  With the help of his parents, he is sure he will be choosing a career in the next couple of years.  Dakota is 8 years old.

Both parents are employed outside, but the income from the farm helps supplement their income.

When speaking with these young men and their parents it restores my faith in our country and I feel sure all is right for our future.

A memo to mark the Women of Distinction Luncheon to be held Oct. 27 at the Uptown Event Center.  Plan on attending to honor a great group of women from our area.  Call 304-624-6881 for reservations.

Get ready for fall, check on that flu shot and until next week “Now you have heard it through the Grapevine.”
