WVU Athletics Announces Transition to Mobile Ticketing for 2020 Football Season

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on June 21, 2020

FROM WVU ATHLETICS

Improved health and safety measures, contactless points of entry, added convenience and ease of flow through the gates are just some of the benefits Mountaineer football fans will experience this fall as the WVU Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will make the switch to mobile ticketing for the 2020 football season.

The mobile ticketing option was first introduced at WVU during the 2013 football season as a method for single-game ticket delivery only. The transition to fully mobile tickets this season at all gates provides a contactless entry, which is the most sanitary, efficient and quickest way to enter a sporting event. With the elimination of paper tickets, fans never have to worry about them being lost in the mail, misplaced or long lines at the ticket window.

Additionally, mobile tickets provide heightened security against counterfeit or stolen tickets. Fans also will enjoy the flexibility of being able to immediately transfer tickets to friends or family members and WVU’s partnership with StubHub, the official fan-to-fan ticket marketplace of the Mountaineers, will continue.

Although ticket buyers will no longer have the option to print their tickets at home, the new digital system will provide quick and safe delivery of tickets via smartphones.

Mountaineer fans will now download and store their tickets to their Apple or Android smartphone, which is what they will use to enter Milan Puskar Stadium or transfer tickets. The smartphone never leaves the owner’s hands and the barcode is scanned without additional touching from stadium security.

“The implementation of mobile ticketing is a growing trend and one that has become a best practice in the world of college athletics and professional sports. With the need for increased health and safety measures due to COVID-19, this is the logical time to upgrade our ticket operations,” Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs Matt Wells said. “I know there will be concerns and adjustments, but I think our fans will be pleasantly surprised at how easy mobile ticketing will be and the benefits it brings.”

The transition will require fans to have up-to-date email addresses attached to their Mountaineer Ticket Office accounts. Fans are encouraged to update their contact information by logging into their WVUGAME.com ticket account.

Wells said that as the summer progresses, additional information and videos will be provided online at WVUsports.com/MobileTickets to educate fans about the new mobile ticketing system. The Athletics Department will also compile FAQs and provide that list and answers in another effort to ensure a smooth transition.

And, if you are a collector of the hard ticket and want to keep your collection up to date, the department intends to provide information in the future to fans who want to buy a commemorative ticket of the 2020 football season.

“Right now, we are starting with the 2020 football season and then we will make decisions about other venues in due time,” Wells added. “For the 2020 football season, the ease of receiving or transferring football tickets at the click of a button on your smartphone is a perk our department looks forward to providing.”
