Harrison County 4-H/ FFA Livestock Show and Sale Planned for This Weekend

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on September 19, 2022

Make plans to join Harrison County 4-H and Future Farmers of America members on Sept. 24 at Summit Park’s upper pavilion as they show and sell their market animal projects.

Youth will exhibit beef and dairy cattle as well as goats before competing in showmanship later in the morning. Animals are placed on conformation. In showmanship, the judge will be selecting youth who do the best job displaying their animal to the judge.
Following the show, youth will participate in a livestock skillathon where their knowledge will be put to the test. 4-H and FFA members will need to identify various breeds of livestock, feedstuffs, and will be tested on their quality assurance knowledge.

The skillathon is just one portion of the premier exhibitor program, which also takes showmanship and animal placing into account. Later that evening, youth will offer their market steer and market goat projects up for sale.

Youth involved in these projects have hands-on experience and acquire an understanding of market animal production These youth learn entrepreneurial skills and become advocates of animal agriculture. Buyers are welcome to join us prior to the sale for a Buyer/exhibitor dinner at 5 p.m., and the auction set to begin at 7 p.m.

Please plan to join us and support youth in agriculture. For those who wish to place bids during the auction, but cannot attend, please visit https://www.kaufmanauctionswv.com/.

For further information, call West Virginia University Extension Agent Jennifer Friend at 304- 624-8650.

Editor’s Note: Submitted photo. Participants in the 2021 Livestock Show were (left to right) Caleb Law, Hannah Glassco, Jade McCray, Adalena McCray, Izzy Glassco, and Ashley Law.
