The Cultural Foundation Presents the Side Street Shutters for their Final Grand Performance

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on April 13, 2018

If Fly Me to the Moon, The Girl from Ipanema, or Sing, Sing Sing, bring a song to your heart and get your toes a tappin’, you’ll surely enjoy listening to the Side Street Strutters, the final performance of The Cultural Foundation’s Grand Performances 2017-2018 season. The show will take place at Robert C. Byrd High School on Thursday, April 26th, at 7:30 p.m.

The Side Street Strutters, with vocalist Mel Collins, invite audiences to explore and enjoy a potpourri of jazz, pop and R&B melodies which have shaped our musical landscape. You’ll be entranced by a collection of songs that inspired, lyrics that reflected a particular time in our country’s history, and melodies that played a significant role towards the development and enjoyment of American popular music.

Their performance has been called “A breathtakingly tight ensemble with flashes of individual brilliance,” by The Herald of Lethbridge, Canada, and Jack Fishman, Executive Director of the Long Beach Symphony in California called it, “A fabulous performance.”

Local students will be able to enjoy a 45 – minute performance at 2 p.m., at RCB. There will be discussion of various careers in the arts, history of American music development over the past 100 years, and of famous American Musicians. Students from Harrison County schools, private schools, home school students and senior citizens are invited to attend and should arrive by 1:30 Thursday afternoon.

The Grand Performances series, which consists of four performances, funds the Cultural Foundation’s Community Arts Grants and other programs. So, by purchasing a ticket, patrons are also supporting the arts in Harrison County. These grants are awarded to approximately twenty arts organizations and schools in the county each year. The Cultural Foundation strives to expand this grant program with revenue received from Grand Performances.

The Grand Performances series is funded by a generous bequest from Barbara B. Highland, who was a significant supporter of the arts. In addition to funding Grand Performances, the Barbara B. Highland Fund for the Arts also sponsors the Wheeling Symphony 4th of July Celebration held on the July 3, 2018 at the Clarksburg Amphitheater and other public performances. The Fund for the Arts also accepts grant applications from the community to fund other art projects.

Information is available on The Cultural Foundation’s website, www.theculturalfoundation.org. Individual tickets for the show will be available at the door for $25. For questions or assistance, please call 304-669-7045.
