Journey to the Crown: April Appearances

By Kaitlin Gates on April 26, 2013 from Journey to the Crown

Here is an update as to what I have been doing around the Mountain State!

I have been very fortunate to have made two appearances with my Miss America sisters!  On March 22, I was invited to Eglon Church of the Brethren with Miss Maryland, Joanna Guy. I was so excited because we have become close over the past year. We went for their "Girls Night Out" event where we ate dinner, spoke, and visited with some of the congregation's girls while they got manicures, facials, and their hair styled! It was so much fun to catch up with Joanna and meet some of the sweet people in Eglon, WV.

The weekend of April 6, I was invited to Waynesburg, Virginia to the America’s Ultimate Miss Pageant.  Joining me for the weekend were Miss Virginia, Rosemary Willis, and Miss North Carolina, Arlie Honeycutt. We had a blast! We attended the pageant, spoke during their show, went to dinner in a limo, and then had an autograph signing/dance party after dinner. Mr. Kirk Propst is the director for this pageant and does a fabulous job! His hospitality and generosity was so kind. Thanks for a great weekend!

Also the weekend of April 6, I was the Keynote Speaker at Shepherd University’s Alpha Phi Omega Sectional Conference. It was such an honor to have been asked and share a message on the importance of service. I really enjoyed seeing all of my Shepherd friends again and visiting one of my favorite parts of WV.

Sunday, April 7 was the Martinsburg Sweeps Pageant. I was the emcee for the show and had a great time that day with many of our Miss WV volunteers and board members. Congratulations to all of the winners! Thanks to everyone who made this day possible.

April 13, I was asked to speak at the Sigma Alpha Formal for West Virginia University. I have to say, this has been one of my favorite appearances to date!  I sat with a table of sorority alumni and had a blast! They were so fun and down-to-earth! I learned about agriculture, the sorority, and their family farms. This group literally had me laughing all night. I hope to see them again very soon and visit their farms!

Monday, April 15, I went to the WVU Children’s Hospital with MWVSO sponsor, Nico Spalon, to paint with the kids. I had a great time, especially with Alana who wore her very own crown just for me! The art we painted will be displayed in the salon for their April 28 event “Cuts for a Cause.” During that day, all of the proceeds from haircuts and eyebrow waxes will benefit WVUCH. It is from 12-5, so I hope to see you there!

April 20 and 21 was our 2013 MWV/MWVOT Contestant Orientation. During those two days, we volunteered at the Blue/Gold game, and the contestants turned in their paperwork and gathered information on the 2013 pageant. We had a lot of fun at the game and are happy to be involved every year because the proceeds benefit WVUCH.

Finally on April 22, I visited the Beckley Veteran’s Hospital. I visited veterans and delivered them special Earth Day bags. It was so nice to spend time with them and thank them for serving our country. Thanks for having me!

Be sure to book me for your event by emailing mwvappearance@gmail.com.
