Saturday was a day of reminiscing and looking to the future for the Bridgeport High School Class of 2024 as 164 outgoing seniors officially became graduates during the annual Commencement ceremony at Wayne Jamison Field.
“Graduation is a time of many emotions,” BHS principal Renee Mathews said. “There are so many memories to recall but also the sense of trying to determine what is next. The Class of 2024 you are prepared with the tools for your unique success. Success looks different for everyone. Do not compare yourself to others. Each of you are truly unique and you mean a lot in our hearts.
“You have been a wonderful class for four years and thank you for continuing that in my first year as principal. You will always have a special place in my heart.”
Senior Class President and Miss BHS Caroline Deniker addressed the crowd with two moving speeches, commending the families, community, BHS staff and fellow students in all working together.
“I’m incredibly proud to be a part of this class,” Deniker said. “This is a class of people who are thinkers, performers, creators and doers. This is a class of people who are caring and compassionate.”
Mr. BHS Sam Dodson’s address to the crowd was equally humble with as much gratitude. Dodson also touched on the many talents and versatility that runs through the entire Class of 2024.
“It’s an honor to have the opportunity to speak in front of this group of incredibly talented individuals,” Dodson said. “This crowd in front of me is a collection of people who all possess what it takes to achieve their goals, to put a plan in place and follow it to its conclusion even when it may seem difficult at times.”
A small sample of those talents were on display during commencement as Ava Fazalare sang “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus and Michael Mugnano sang “I Lived” by One Republic.
Additionally, the Jazz Quartet of Kaylie Kwiatkowski, Garrett Smith, Brayden Thomas and Shane Totten performed the “Star Spangled Banner,” Student Body President Blake Robison led the crowd with the Pledge of Allegiance and outgoing drum major Victoria Baldwin directed the BHS band one final time for the school’s alma mater before delivering the farewell remarks as the Senior Class Vice President.
