Council to Discuss Rezoning Ordinance for White Oaks Project; BHS Swimmer Romano to be Honored

By Chris Johnson on April 19, 2024

A development project at White Oaks that will exceed $5 million, is expected to take another step forward during Monday’s City Council meeting.

Council will consider and act on an ordinance that would approve the amendment of Phase II of The White Oaks Business Park by amending the city’s zoning ordinance and amending the zoning map of 11.46 acres along White Oaks Boulevard.

“They are putting in a residential development and would like to rezone from B-2  (Business-2) to R-3 (Residential- 3) as it will be a mix of multi-family and single-family,” Community Development Director Andrea Kerr said. “This was already unanimously approved at the last Planning Commission meeting, so it is just procedural to have Council’s final stamp of approval.”

More on the White Oaks project can be read HERE

Also at Monday’s Council meeting, the subject of authorizing the City Manager to hire special counsel will be discussed and it will likely be in executive session. Council is also expected to provide an update on the status of finding a new City Manager.

Police Chief Mark Rogers has filled in as Interim City Manager since Brian Newton resigned on July 1, 2023.

During the awards and presentations portion of Monday’s meeting, Bridgeport High School junior standout swimmer Amelia Romano will be recognized for winning a state championship.

Romano won the 200 freestyle state championship at the Mylan Aquatic Center in February with a time of 1:58.91.

Romano entered the state meet with the top time in the 200 free at 1:59.66. In preliminaries, she swam a 2:01.08 which was behind her friend and regional rival, Elkins’ Rachel Shryock’s 2:00.14. Shyrock was the runner-up in the finals with a time of 1:59.62.

Prior to the 7 p.m. start of the regular meeting, there will be a work session that starts at 5:30 p.m.

Father Walt Jagela of All Saints Catholic Church is scheduled to provide the invocation which will be followed by the Pledge of Allegiance to start the regular meeting.

In addition to a report from Mayor Andy Lang and a City Manager’s report from Rogers, their will be a period of time set aside for public comments.
