Second Annual Jack Rollins Superhero 5K is Sept. 7

By Julie Perine on August 18, 2019

Last year, the Jack Strong Foundation presented the first-ever Jack Rollins Superhero 5K and Kids Fun Run to honor Jack and all little ones who have bravely fought cancer. Back and bigger is the second annual event, scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 7 at Wayne Jamison Field.

Registration is set for 7:30 a.m. with the 5K starting at 8:30 a.m. The first 100 adult runners will receive swag bags and T-shirt. Race categories are 12 and under; 13-17, 18-24, 25-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59 and 60 and over.

Online registration is $20 HERE at tristateracer.com. Race day registration is $25.

Following the main race, a kids’ fun run will be held around 10 a.m.; participation just $5 per runner age 12 and under. Each of the first 100 kids will receive a superhero-themed participation medal.

Activities - including meet and greets with several superheroes, food trucks, basket raffles, face painting and a superhero training course  - will be ongoing through 2 p.m.

Founded and facilitated by Jack's mom Brooke Rollins, the Jack Strong Foundation raises funds for childhood cancer, financially supports families of children battling the disease and provides gifts of comfort to young cancer victims. Jack, who soared to his forever home three years ago at age 5, captured many hearts during his courageous battle with neuroblastoma.

In addition to Wonder Woman, Iron Man, Captain America and, of course, Spiderman - Jack's favorite - there will be photo opps with Miss West Virginia World America Katelyn Hollar and Miss West Virginia World Teen Ally Spellman.

Kids and adults are encouraged to wear superhero T-shirts and costumes. A $50 cash prize will be awarded to the best-dressed.

Rollins said last year that she was overwhelmed with the community’s support and involvement. She echoes that comment this year, thanking individuals for participating and supporting the inaugural 5K.

Some say they look forward to walking and running the course and others can’t wait to meet the superheroes. Then, there are those coming for the social aspects and to enjoy the food trucks.

“But I think the comment I hear the most is from the more experienced runners wanting a chance to win one of the medals,” Rollins said. “They are pretty awesome - and every bit of what Jack would have wanted - so, they have a special meaning behind them, as well.”

She’s excited – and crossing her fingers – for another super successful event.
