Several Bridgeport Students to Participate in County Social Studies Fair

By Julie Perine on November 16, 2014

Several students of Bridgeport schools will advance to the Harrison County Social Studies Fair, Saturday, Nov. 22. at the Robert C. Byrd National Aerospace Education Center in Bridgeport.

In October, Social Studies Fairs took place on the school level for both individual and partner projects. Those who placed first in their age group and category move on to the county level, said Wendy Imperial, assistant superintendent of Harrison County Schools.

Community leaders will judge the projects between 9-11:30 a.m. on Nov. 22 and the awards ceremony will take place at 1 p.m. The judging process includes viewing the completed projects and listening to explanations provided by creators of those projects.

Students who place first at the county level will continue on to the regional level.  The Regional Fair (RESA 7) will be held March 27, 2015, at Fairmont Middletown Mall.  Students who place first at the regional level will continue to the state competition.

Among those moving on to the county level is Simpson Elementary 5th grader, Maci Cook, who along with her friend Gracie Courtney, put together a project titled “Presidential Pets.”

Maci said she likes the Social Studies Fair for a few reasons.

“It is a good opportunity to learn new things you have interests in, learn to speak in front of people and meet new people with similar interests,” she said.

She said she and her partner chose the project because they were curious how presidents felt about their pets – and how many different animals have lived in the White House.
