Off the Shelf: Oscar Nominated Movies Found at the Bridgeport Public Library

The Oscar nominations were announced this week.  There were few surprises although “Black Panther” was the first superhero film to ever be nominated for Best Picture.  “Roma” which was primarily released on Netflix was also nominated for Best Picture.  It is a black and white film about director Alfonso Cuaron’s early days in Mexico, and it tied for most nominations with “The Favourite,” a period drama about Queen Anne.  Each received ten nominations.
 
The nominees for Best Picture also include “A Star is Born,” “Vice,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Green Book,” and “BlacKkKlansman.”
          
Many of these films are available on DVD and can be checked out from the library’s collection.  Quite a few are scheduled for release in February including “A Star is Born,” and “Bohemian Rhapsody.”
           
Nominated for Best Actress is Glenn Close for “The Wife,” due out January 29th, Lady Gaga for “A Star is Born,” due out February 19th, Yalitza Aparicio for “Roma,” Olivia Colman for “The Favourite,” and Melissa McCarthy for “Can You Every Forgive Me?”
           
Nominated for Best Actor is Christian Vale for “Vice,” Bradley Cooper for “A Star is Born,” Viggo Mortensen for “Green Book” due out March 5th, William Dafoe for “At Eternity’s Gate,” due out February 12th and Rami Malek for “Bohemian Rhapsody” due out February 12th.
           
Best Supporting Actress includes Amy Adams for “Vice,” Marian de Tavira for “Roma,” Regina King for “If Beale Street Could Talk,” and Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz for “The Favourite.”  Best Supporting Actor includes Mahershala Ali for “Green Book,” Adam Driver for “BlackkKlansman” already available, Sam Elliott for “A Star is Born,” Richard E. Grant for “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” and Sam Rockwell for “Vice.” 
           
Other films awarded in various categories that are currently available include “Avengers: Infinity War,” “Christopher Robin,” “First Man,” “Ready, Player One,” “Incredibles 2,” “Mirai,” “Isle of Dogs,” and “A Quiet Place.”
           
“Vice,” “The Favourite,” “Roma,” “Can You Ever Forgive Me,” and “If Beale Street Could Talk” have not yet received release dates.  The Oscars will be handed out on Sunday, February 24th.
