Off the Shelf: The Unofficial Start to Summer the Books that Come with It

By Sharon Saye on May 29, 2019 from Off the Shelf

Memorial Day may not be the official start of summer, but in a practical way it is.  Summer Reading starts as soon as the weather improves enough to head to the porch or the beach with a cool drink and a good book.  For those who need some help on what to read this summer, you can Google summer reading and be buried in suggestions.  You can also take advantage of the free handout the library offers monthly called BookPage.  It is a 32-page newsletter about the latest books available from publishers with interviews, features, reviews, columns and departments.  Copies of the current month’s BookPage can be found at both circulation desks and there are usually a few older issues available as well.

In the June issue, there is a two-page spread about bestselling author Elizabeth Gilbert whose post-divorce memoir, “Eat, Pray, Love,” became a blockbuster movie with Julia Roberts.  Her latest novel, “City of Girls,” will be released in early June about a “gaggle of lively New York showgirls” in 1940s New York.

Other big novels for June are “Cari Mora,” by Thomas Harris, “Mrs. Everything” by Jennifer Weiner, “Recursion” by Blake Crouch, “Ask Again, Yes,” by Mary Beth Keane, “The Confessions of Frannie Langton” by Sara Collins, “Ayesha at Last” by Uzma Jalaluddin,, “The Last Guest House” by Megan Miranda, “The Daughters of Temperance Hobbs” by Katherine Howe. and “Evvie Drake Starts Over” by Linda Holmes.

Later in the summer, the following books will be available:  “The Nickel Boys” by Colson Whitehead, “Good Girl, Bad Girl” by Michael Robotham, “Someone We Know” by Shari Lapena, “The Turn of the Key” by Ruth Ware, “The Swallows” by Lisa Lutz, “The Girl Who Lived Twice” by David Lagercrantz, “The Beekeeper of Aleppo” by Christy Lefteri, and “A Better Man” by Louise Penny.

The Summer Reading Program begins the first week of June.  There is one for both children and adults; so, please pick up a packet with details.  And don’t forget to take home a copy of the June issue of BookPage.
