Outside the Tribe: Some Video Highlights for Everybody that misses High School Sports

By Chris Johnson on April 25, 2020 from Outside the Tribe

Like many throughout the state, I understand the reasons why the high school basketball season never ended and why the spring sports season never began.

I also think the right decisions were made in regard to closing the school buidlings for the remainder of the academic year therefore giving the WVSSAC no option other than to shutting down sports.

But it also doesn't mean that I like the decision. In fact, the whole situation flat out stinks.

For those that are into replays of previous professional and collegiate athletic events, there are a lot of TV network and streaming service options out there where you can re-live a game. Other than Game 5 of the 1983 World Series, where Eddie Murray hit two home runs and the Baltimore Orioles wrapped things up against the Philadelphia Phillies, I haven't watched any of them because I just haven't been into it.

Those who know me well, know my true passion is West Virginia high school sports. While doing some spring cleaning on my phone and hard drive I notice that I still have access to quite a few highlight clips. I decided to put those together for one video post that shows some of the top high school moments from the past couple of years.

Now, I don't have every top moment from the past couple of years. Surprisingly, for me, I couldn't find anything that I still have of Dante Bonamico or Luke Dyer and I could have sworn I had more of Hope Bray.

But I do have several clips of McKenna Smith and Freddy Canary running really fast (spoiler alert: every clip in the below video of them was from an event where a record was set).

There's also a lot of the type of plays made by Jarrod West and Hanna McClung that led to them winning state basketball player of the year awards.

There's plenty of Gracey Lamm passes and Kaitlin Smith 3-pointers. There's dunks. There's blocked shots. There's buzzer beaters. There's celebrations. There's Carson Winkie touchdowns. There's even one clip of everybody's favorite distance runner, Eli Bailey.

Normally, posting a video with a running time of slightly more than 40 minutes (first draft topped 70) but these are not normal times. I wish I had more that I could have included because there is no time limit when it comes to summing up how important high school sports are to us.

I hope everybody enjoys the video. I certainly did. It brought back a lot of great memories and it also made me realize that this message can be said enough, "High School sports, we miss you."

Feel free to leave coments about what was your favorite moment and somebody, anybody, please tell me which is more impressive, Tre Junkins' made shot on the basketball court or his catch on the football field.

Without further ado, here's the video:
