Bridgeport High School baseball standout Michael Romano finalized his plans to continue playing at the next level as he signed his National Letter of Intent with the United States Coast Guard Academy on Wednesday.
The signing ceremony took place in front of a gathering of family, friends, teammates, coaches and school administrators at BHS.
“I always knew I wanted to serve my country,” Romano said. “I always wanted to go do something that was bigger than myself. It just kind of panned out. I met the Coast Guard coach at a camp, and it blossomed from there. I went up there and it was probably the best thing I’ve ever seen in terms of a campus visit. It was fantastic and I’m super excited to go there.
In his junior season, Romano established himself as arguably the top catcher in the state. He earned Class AAA First-Team All-State honors and would have likely done so if he didn’t have a single plate appearance for the 32-6 Indians, that’s how good he is on defense.
Romano threw out a mind-boggling 20-of-29 baserunners, saved countless wild pitches with his quick reflexes and managed a top-notch pitching staff for the Tribe.
However, Romano also led the Indians in hitting with a .393 average to go along with a double, 21 runs, 18 RBIs and 12 stolen bases.
“Defensively, he has always been really good,” BHS baseball coach Robert Shields said. “He has great feet, quick hands and a strong accurate arm.
“He’s worked at it really hard to be able to hit the ball to all fields. He runs well too which you don’t see a lot with catchers.
“This is something he has worked hard for. He’s such a student of the game, a no-nonsense type of kid. He has a great demeanor. No matter if it’s practice or a game, he has the right approach. Everything he does he tries to with excellence.”
Romano said he believes his all-around skill set helped him get in the position to compete at the Division I level with the Coast Guard Academy.
When I was younger I never was a great hitter, I was just out there for my defense so I just tried to perfect that part of my game,” Romano said. “My last two years I’ve worked hard to improve my offense and it comes down to just being a baseball player, being a team player and being able to perform in the moments that matter the most.”
Romano, who will major in marine and environmental science at the Coast Guard Academy which is located in New London, Conn, was one of three BHS athletes to sign a Letter of Intent on Wednesday.
He was joined by Carter Zuliani and Wes Brown Jr. who will both play Division I football. Zuliani and Brown both had commitment stories on Connect Bridgeport within the past week and will have updated stories in the upcoming days on Connect-Bridgeport.
