BHS Volleyball Team Captures Sectional Championship; Indians to Host Co-Regional Next Week

The Bridgeport High School volleyball team captured the Class AAA Region II, Section 2 championship on Wednesday, defeating Robert C. Byrd, 25-12, 25-11 and 25-11.
The Indians now 48-8-2, will be host for one of the co-regional finals next Thursday against Hampshire where a spot in the state tournament will be on the line. Game time is tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m.
RCB will travel to Frankfort for the other co-regional.
“They know the situation,” BHS coach Ali Burton said. “They know it is win or go home and we came out strong right out of the gate.”
In Game 1 against RCB, the Indians jumped out to a 4-0 lead highlighted by a block from Myleigh Smell and Salam Rajjoub then an ace from Calleigh Morgan.
Up 12-9, Rajjoub took over and during a stretch where she had three kills as the Indians scored six straight points to take a 17-9 lead before closing out the 25-12 victory.
“Salam really came to play,” Burton said. “She plays with so much energy and when she gets going the rest of the team feeds off it.”
A kill from Smell broke a 3-all tie in Game 2 and spark a 10-1 run for the Indians and they weren’t threatened from there. Rajjoub closed it out with a kill on match point to make it 25-11.
Game 3 also saw a 3-all tie that led to another big BHS run as the Indians 9-1 run capped by a kill from Taylor Randolph and they cruised from there to close out the 25-11 win and capture the sectional title.
The Indians took care of business in the sectional semifinals defeating Lincoln in three sets, 25-8, 25-5 and 25-13.
In Game 1, a kill from Smell gave BHS a 16-4 lead. The Indians got three consecutive kills from different players in Morgan, Kennedy Wolfe and Rajjoub to make it 21-8. Morgan then put the game away with back-to-back aces, making it 25-8.
BHS went on a 6-1 run to start Game 2 then a 16-3 run capped by a kill from Smell to make it 22-3. After the Cougars scored two straight points, Morgan had a kill and the Indians benefited from a service error to make it 25-5.
Game 3 was a little tighter as BHS led just 11-7 before an 8-0 run gave the Indians some breathing room. Morgan served an ace to put the Indians up 22-8.
Avery Humble put the game away with a kill, making it 25-13 and sending BHS into the sectional title game.
