Braves Softball Team Rolls to 25-1 Win against MMS

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on March 27, 2023

SUBMITTED BY COACH BILLY ESTOK

Bridgeport Middle School’s softball team traveled to Clarksburg Thursday evening to take on Mountaineer Middle and coasted to a 25-1 win.

During the game, all 18 players present got an opportunity to play. All contributed to the team’s win.

The Lady Braves wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard. Gracia Knight started the game with a leadoff single to left. That was followed by consecutive doubles by Mia Shaughnessy and Avery Humble and a triple by Mahaylee Messenger. Madilyn Fittro was hit by a pitch and Chloe Barlow worked a walk to load the bases. Messenger and Fittro scored on wild pitches and BMS had a 5-0 lead.

In the second with two outs, Messenger walked and stole second. She scored on a single by Fittro.

Mountaineer scored its only run in the bottom of the second. Three walks and a single contributed to the scoring and the score was now 6-1 in favor of BMS.

The Lady Braves extended their lead by scoring nine times in the top of the third. Four Mountaineer fielding errors, two walks, a hit batter, a double by Olivia Corder, and a single by Fittro gave BMS a 15-1 advantage.

BMS put the game on ice by scoring 10 runs in the top of the fourth. Scoring for BMS were Olivia Bell (2), Humble, Messenger, Fittro, Barlow, Sylvia Devono, Breanna Laxton, Madilyn Thomas, and Mara Beverage.

Addison Mike was given the starting pitcher assignment for the Lady Braves. It was her first varsity pitching start and she earned her first varsity win by pitching a complete game. She ended the game by striking out the final three batters she faced. Mike’s pitching line read four innings, one run, two hits, three walks, one batter hit by a pitch, and seven strikeouts.

BMS returns to action Tuesday, March 28, when they travel to Taylor County to play the Lady Knights at 7 p.m. Bridgeport will also host Lincoln Middle School on March 29 with game time at 5 p.m. The next day, March 30, they hit the road to play Ritchie County Middle School and the start time is 5:30 p.m.
