Indians Score Five in Top of Seventh to Take Control of Regional Tournament with Morgantown

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on May 23, 2022

The Bridgeport High School baseball team is one win away from a return to the state tournament.

The seven-time defending state champion Indians (33-5) took control of the Class AAA Region I tournament at Morgantown on Monday, scoring five runs in the top of the seventh en route to a 5-1 victory.

The best of three series moves to Bridgeport for a 5:30 p.m. game on Tuesday and with a victory the Indians would secure a trip to Charleston.

Chris Harbert pitched six standout innings, surrendering just four hits and one run but his counterpart Reed Bailey was even more effective for the Mohigans at least through six scoreless innings.

Morgantown took a 1-0 lead on Caleb Cottle’s RBI single in the fourth, bringing in Ryan Fluharty who had just doubled.

BHS tied it in the top of the seventh when Cam Cole’s RBI double scored Aidan Paulsen. Cole would score on Zach Rohrig’s sac fly before Phil Reed delivered the big blow with a three-run homer.

Austin Mann came on in the seventh to earn a save.

Bailey, who struck out nine, was charged with three of the five runs in the seventh and was tagged with the loss.
