Philip Barbour's Halfin Wins Player of Year Honors; Bridgeport's Smell Finalist for Award

Bridgeport junior standout Myleigh Smell was a finalist for the State Volleyball Player of the Year Award, an honor that was won by Philip Barbour’s MacKenna Halfin.
Smell emerged as one of the state’s premier all-around players this year and led the Indians to a 40-8-7 record and a spot in the state tournament for the ninth consecutive year.
Smell finished with 508 kills, 71 aces, 45 blocks, 27 assists and 384 digs.
Halfin had 514 kills, 72 bocks and 32 aces to pave the way for the Colts making it to the Class AA state tournament for the 22nd consecutive year where they finished as runner-up to state champion Oak Glen.
Oak Glen’s Ashlyn six was also a Player of the Year finalist after positing 308 kills, 72 digs and 144 digs.
Other POY finalists were Greenbrier East’s Dia Sauvage, Wayne’s Gabby Elliott, Musselman’s Ada McCoy and Williamstown’s Claire Strobl.
Sauvage had 711 digs, 123 aces and 104 assists. Elliott finished with 403 kills, 114 aces and 280 digs.
McCoy posted 708 kills to go along with 37 blocks and 246 digs. Strobl had 507 kills, 138 blocks, 52 aces and 265 digs.
