The Grapevine: Enjoying Our State's Beauty in the Fall
By Rosalyn Queen on October 22, 2020 from The Grapevine
This past week I had the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the leaves turning color. My daughter, Leslie her husband, Dixon and his sister Lisa took a trip to Harpers Ferry so they could hike the Appalachian Trail. Although they had tried it before, this time they were going to make it a two-day trip and camp along the trail.
While they were gone I spent time in my room reading another of Kristin Hannah's books and watched most of the judicial hearings. When they returned we ate a great dinner at our favorite local restaurant and upon leaving we came across the Republican headquarters and noticed they had a “back the blue” sign on display and thought we would try to get one for Dixon who is a deputy.
While we were in the headquarters, we had the opportunity to meet one of the most interesting women I have ever met. She was Layla Suarez Mooney. Layla immigrated to the United States from Cuba with her family. She has documented her and her family’s experience in a book. Her son, Alex Mooney is a U. S. Congressman from West Virginia. Her brother Xavier Suarez was the mayor of Miami in 1985 and her nephew, Francis Suarez was the mayor of Miami in 2017.
A quote from her book says “Layla would like to debunk any mythical notion that the current regime is what the Cuban people yearn for. Put simply the Cuban people yearn for the American dream, but on their own soil.” I hope soon that I will be able to have her here as a speaker at the PWA.
Now back to the leaves, please take the opportunity to enjoy them. I often wonder why anyone would want to leave our state with our four seasons and the beauty they bring us.
My brother and sister in law are here from Florida for our annual birthday celebrations. Since I have received some mushrooms from Mary Barnett, I will be sharing some of them at our birthday dinner.
Two of my dear friends, John Guzzi and Thelma Ferrise called me while I was away, and it is always a pleasure to talk to them. Johnny and I talked about mushrooms and Thelma and I had a great time discussing politics.
I encourage each of you to make sure you vote.
I hope everyone is adapting to the quarantine and that it will soon be over. Stay healthy, be safe and until next week “Now You Have Heard It Through The Grapevine.”
