The Locavore Next Door: Minard's Serving up Family Tradition for 75 Years and Counting

By Carrie Robinson on July 07, 2012 from The Locavore Next Door

You would have been hard pressed to find very many restaurants open in this area this past weekend. In fact, many were not as a result of the widespread power outages throughout our community this week. But my husband and I did find some culinary refuge at the well-known and long established Minard’s Spaghetti Inn on Old Route 50 in Clarksburg.

Minard’s Spaghetti Inn has been a family-owned pillar in this area since it first opened its doors in 1937. Their menu is straight forward, traditional Italian cuisine - spaghetti and meatballs, lasagna, minestrone soup, spumoni … Once upon a time, this locavore gal worked her first-ever serving job in this very same restaurant. I found that not much had changed in the 14 years since I had last clocked out there. And that is definitely a good thing.

We started our meal with their Italian Sampler platter. This appetizer includes breaded and fried zucchini, cheese sticks, breaded and fried cocktail meatballs, Italian sausage, and a serving of peppers in sauce. The portions were perfect for a table of two.

Every meal at Minard’s comes with a salad and fresh baked bread. Their house dressing is simple - fresh garlic, olive oil, vinegar, tomatoes, and lettuce all tossed in a well-seasoned wooden bowl that the restaurant has been using for years.

I had the ever popular Bit ‘O Italy plate for my entrée. The Bit ‘O Italy includes a helping of Minard’s lasagna, spaghetti with meat sauce, and their beef cacciatore. I will admit it. The beef cacciatore is the main reason why I ordered this entrée. Tender pot roast served in peppers and sauce? Yes, please!

My husband and I finished our visit at Minard’s with a little something sweet. He had the Carrot Cake (which I should mention, along with their tiramisu, is made locally at Almost Heaven Desserts), and I had a slice of their Almond Cream Cake. Both cakes were amazing.

Dining at this restaurant is like taking a step back to a simpler time. A time when the family would sit down around the dining table to share a family cooked meal. If you are looking for a good Italian meal like your grandmother used to make, then you owe yourself an evening at Minard’s Spaghetti Inn.

Minard’s Spaghetti Inn is located at 813 East Pike Street, Clarksburg and is open seven days a week.  For hours or to place a take-out order, call 304-623-1711.
