There will be a little bit of a traffic delay early Friday morning, May 10, along parts of Philadelphia and Johnson Avenues. But it will be brief and for a reason that may also see a crowd on hand.
Prevention Resource Officer Jamie Hamrick has announced that the annual Bridgeport High School Senior Parade will take place that morning. Students will lineup at Simpson Creek Baptist Church at 6:45 a.m. and the parade begins at 7 a.m.
For those not familiar, the parade consists of students driving their cars, as well as any other motorized mode of transportation and often much more. It celebrates the seniors’ last official day of school.
“Kids are allowed to drive various types of vehicles from golf carts, tractors, lawn mowers, loud dirt bikes, and even loud cars so please be aware there may be a little bit of noise briefly that morning,” said Hamrick. “There also students that will be on horses, bicycles or anything else you can think of.”
Hamrick said the goal is to not disrupt traffic too much. However, she said even though the plan is for two-way traffic to be maintained, but there will be a possibility of a short delay leading from Simpson Creek Baptist Church to City Park Drive, which is the main entrance to Bridgeport High School. She said the opposite lane should not be impacted and encourages those driving to be cautious for safety of the students and for the possibility traffic could be delayed there if a vehicle brought by the student proves to be uniquely wide.
The event is for more than the seniors. Along with parents, family members, and friends of those graduating shortly, many from the community come out and offer their support. Hamrick said anyone is welcome to line the streets.
“It’s grown to be quite the spectacle,” she said.
Bridgeport High School’s graduation is May 25 at Wayne Jamison Field. It is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
