A mini-documentary on the life of Bridgeport High School alum Dan McNamee will begin this coming Monday on WYMT TV in Hazard, Kentucky, according to Producer Kyle Collier.
A crew from the television station was in West Virginia in September to interview individuals who recall the 1995 injury at Magnolia High School during a prep football game that left McNamee, then a sophomore, paralyzed. Although he hasn’t walked since, McNamee’s life has been as robust as he can make it.
The crew not only filmed those who knew McNamee – including former Coach Wayne Jamison, Physical Therapist Mike Martin and his teacher Alice Rowe – but they also went beyond that. The crew managed to interview Magnolia Coach Dave Cisar as well as former MHS player Drew Mason. It was Mason that McNamee was tackling when he was injured.
Along with interviews, the crew also captured McNamee, his wife and Mason watching the game film for the first time. It proved to be an emotional experience.
The series will begin Monday and run again Tuesday and Wednesday. The segment is being done in the area as McNamee currently lives in Kentucky and Collier, who knew the McNamee family, believed that his story would not only be of interest, but have an impact. The series is titled “Do It For Dan,” which was the slogan that Bridgeport and surrounding communities took up as a rallying cry following the incident.
“We are excited to present "Do It For Dan" beginning Monday Nov. 25 through Wednesday Nov. 27. The three-part series takes you on a journey through Dan McNamee's life and how he transformed everyone around him,” said Collier. “We hope Dan's story impacts our viewers as much as it has impacted us.”
