After 55 years, one of Harrison County’s longest standing restaurants has closed its doors. The owner of Clarksburg’s Red Caboose confirmed that the business was shut down on Wednesday.
“I’m retired,” said owner John Arco. “It was time to give it up.”
The Caboose has been a stopping point for many throughout the area, region and even state for decades. It was known for its Italian food, multiple televisions and as a place to grab a legal beverage after a long day at work.
Along with the standard fare, The Red Caboose also offered many of its own specials. The restaurant had its own wing night with dozens of wing sauces and created a “spa-hoagie,” which was spaghetti and meatballs baked inside a hoagie bun.
Social media was alive with comments of its closing last night as the Caboose’s Facebook page included a post on its shutting down. Bridgeport resident John Minnocci was one of the individuals who spent plenty of time there in the past and was sad to hear of it no longer being in business.
“It was a gathering place for me and many of my friends on plenty of Friday and Saturday nights. We’d have a good meal and watch ball games,” said Minnocci. “I actually watched the O.J. Simpson chase of his white Bronco in 1994 there. The place was packed.
“I’m sorry to hear that it’s closing,” he continued. “My family loved it.”
The restaurant wasn’t always located on its current side of the road on East Pike Street just off of the Joyce Street exit of U.S. Route 50. Years ago, it was relocated from the opposite side of the road.
While Arco said the business is closed, he also said that it is up for sale. The property is being listed with KRB Kaufman Properties, LLC, out of Bridgeport. If anyone is interested in acquiring the business or learning about it, Arco said to contact them by phone. The number for the business is 304-842-2468.
