For the first time in three years, Bridgeport High Schools boys cross country team lost to an opponent that wasn’t Class AAA. Unfortunately, the first setback to a team in the Class AA-A ranks in the last three years came at the most inopportune of times.
The Indians saw their hopes of a three-peat come up just short in Ona this afternoon at the state cross country meet at Cabell Midland High School. BHS finished second to Berkeley Springs on the day.
Ironically, Bridgeport held off a challenge last week from BSHS in the Region II meet in Taylor County. Today, they weren’t able to pull off the trick and it was by practically the slimmest of margins.
Berkeley Springs ended the meet with a score of 77, while Bridgeport was right behind with a 79. Ritchie County came in third with a combined score of 82.
Bridgeport’s top three finishers crossed the finish line all in a row. Drake Bolle was first across in 13th place with a time of 17 minutes, 3.08 seconds. Mark Duez was next in 14th place with a time of 17 minutes, 4.34 seconds, while Ian Frailey was 15th and posted a time of 17 minutes, 12.56 seconds.
Jimmy Lacaria came in 22nd place (17:30.22), while Coleton Marsh finished in 32nd place (17:42.56). The top five finishers counted toward Bridgeport’s final total.
The second place finish marks the third time in three years the team hasn’t won a meet they participated in. The two previous meet losses also saw BHS finish in second place, but both of those setbacks were to Class AAA foes.
