After another week of undefeated play, Bridgeport High School’s baseball team still finds themselves ranked No. 2 in the latest Class AA Charleston Daily Mail prep baseball poll. The Indians, who were the preseason top-ranked team, have been in the second position for two weeks.
Chapmanville, who overtook the Tribe April 13 in the rankings, is still the top-ranked team in the poll voted on by sports writers from across West Virginia. CHS had five of the seven first place votes and a total of 68 points to edge Bridgeport, which had the other two first place votes and 65 points.
The Indians, currently 9-0 before today’s scheduled game at Elkins, are the defending Class AA champions. The team is coming off of a week that included a 7-4 win over rival Robert C. Byrd and a 2-1 eight-inning win over East Fairmont. The Bees are ranked No. 4 in this week’s poll, while Fairmont Senior is ranked No. 5.
No other local teams are in the top 10. However, Lincoln is in the “receiving votes” portion of the standings. The Cougars would be at the No. 13 position.
Harrison County is also represented in the Class A portion of the poll. Notre Dame is ranked No. 1 with four first place votes and 67 points. The Fighting Irish are ahead of Man. The Hillbillies have the other three first place votes and 61 total points.
Nitro is ranked first in Class AAA. Jefferson is second.
