Thanks to Bridgeport’s win against Keyser Friday night, the Indians have solidified their leads as the No. 1 team in Class AA in the recently released WVSSAC standings. The Indians come in with a 13.78 rating, which is more than a point higher than the second-ranked team in ‘AA’ this week.
The good news for 9-0 BHS is that due to its high ranking, it appears they have clinched at least a top four seed for the postseason. However, it’s almost a certainty that Indians’ Coach Josh Nicewarner and his staff don’t want to take anything to chance and would like to finish the year at 10-0.
A win Friday night would not only guarantee home field advantage throughout the postseason as long as the Indians win, but also locks down the No. 1 spot. However, in order to get that Bridgeport will have to beat Class AA No. 2 Fairmont Senior.
The Polar Bears, 7-1 and with a 12.57 rating, are coming off a bye week. They will host the Indians Friday night at East-West Stadium.
Outside of Bridgeport, there are only two other unbeaten in Class AA. Point Pleasant and Mingo Central, both at 8-0, are No. 3 and No. 4, respectively this week. Sissonville Rounds out the top five with a 7-1 mark.
As for other local squads, Lincoln is tied with Winfield for the No. 9 spot. North Marion comes in at No. 13 and Liberty is No. 15 on the week. Robert C. Byrd, at 4-5, is ranked No. 20. Bridgeport’s foe this past Friday, the Golden Tornado, is still in the playoff picture at 5-3 and ranked No. 14.
In Class A, South Harrison tumbled after suffering a home loss to St. Marys. The Hawks, at 7-1, are ranked No. 7 in this week’s standings.
Unlike the MetroNews poll - CLICK HERE for that story - the WVSSAC poll is computer-based and uses strength of schedule and wins by foes beaten as measuring sticks. The top 16 teams in each class compete for state championships.
