ABB Scarecrow Deadline Extended Until Oct. 5

By Julie Perine on October 03, 2023

The Associated Businesses of Bridgeport has extended the deadline for scarecrow placement. The new deadline is noon Thursday, Oct. 5. Businesses that have registered with the ABB for the 2023 scarecrow display and contest must have their scarecrows placed on their designated Main Street lamp posts by that date and time to be included in photos and online voting at Connect-Bridgeport.com.

According to Hilary Gonzalez, who spearheads the ABB project, a total of 34 businesses have registered for this year’s display. Although winners will be named – both by popular vote and judges’ choice – the main purpose of the display is to create a whimsical downtown corridor for people to enjoy.

“It’s all just done in fun. There’s no big prize, but the winners do get their business name and a photo of their winning scarecrow posted on a traveling plaque – and they are able to display that plaque in their business until the following year’s contest,” Gonzalez said.

As is tradition, the plaques will be presented at Light Up Night, which takes place this year Nov. 30.

Some scarecrows are traditional in nature. Others cleverly represent the service or product offered by the business or pop culture personalities.

“It’s a fun rivalry between businesses and appreciated by locals and city visitors alike. It helps create a festive atmosphere as we head into the Halloween season,” Gonzalez said.

Voting takes place on Connect-Bridgeport beginning Fri., Oct. 6 and ending Monday, Oct. 30. The rules of the contest are one vote per person. Voters must be registered users of the Connect-Bridgeport website.

All displays must be removed by Friday, Nov. 3, except for the winning scarecrows, which will remain on display through Sunday, Nov. 5. Any business which pays business and occupation tax in the City of Bridgeport is eligible for membership in the ABB. Dues are $95 per year and due Oct. 1 to participate in the scarecrow contest and/or Light Up Night.
