Bridgeport: Feeding Deer is Prohibited in City Limits

The City of Bridgeport would like to remind residents that feeding whitetail deer within City limits is prohibited under Bridgeport City Code § 505.14.
While feeding deer may seem harmless, it can create unintended consequences for our community and our local wildlife.
Providing food encourages deer to gather and remain in residential areas. More deer in our neighborhoods can mean more deer crossing our roadways, increasing the risk of deer-vehicle collisions and creating a safety concern for both motorists and wildlife.
Feeding also causes deer to congregate in unnaturally high numbers around the same food source. Close contact can make it easier for diseases and parasites to spread among deer.
There is also a connection between deer and tick populations. Deer are important hosts for adult blacklegged ticks, and attracting deer into yards and neighborhoods can create more opportunities for people and pets to encounter ticks. Ticks can transmit Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses. While deer do not directly transmit Lyme disease to people, reducing unnecessary deer activity around our homes can help reduce opportunities for tick exposure.
Please do not put out corn, apples, salt, vegetables, hay, or other food for deer.
Feeding deer may come from good intentions, but it can ultimately create greater risks for the animals and the community.
Please help us keep Bridgeport’s residents, motorists, pets, and wildlife safer. Don’t feed the deer.
