Rain and a planned weekend off for prom combined to limit the Bridgeport Indians to only two baseball games last week, but the Tribe, which entered the week as the unanimous No. 1 team in MetroNews’ rankings, took advantage of their opportunities.
Bridgeport defeated University away, 11-2, on Tuesday, then defeated Wheeling Park on the road, 14-3, on Thursday.
Against the Hawks, Bridgeport scored two runs in the first inning, then, after University put a pair on the board in the home half of the inning, scored three runs in the top of the second.
It was 5-2 until the seventh when the Tribe hung six runs on the board.
Kasen Baun went four innings for the win, giving up two runs on four hits while striking out six, then Blake Butcher picked up the save with three innings of one-hit shutout ball with four Ks.
Baun helped his own cause with a home run at the plate, finishing 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs while also drawing two walks and Butcher did the same with two RBIs.
Mason Bowen doubled and drove in two runs and Brooks Vass and Guy Avolio also doubled.
Down 1-0 after two innings against Wheeling Park, Bridgeport scored three runs in the top of the third to take the lead for good.
After the Patriots closed the gap to 3-2 in the bottom of the third, the Tribe scored four in the fourth, one in the fifth, three in the sixth and one in the seventh.
Owen Sondericker got the win on the mound, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts in six innings.
Avolio closed, fanning one in the seventh.
Dom Fazalare, Luke Rohrig and Sondericker all doubled, with Rohrig finishing 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs and Sondericker also knocking in a pair.
Baun continued his strong week with a 2-for-3 showing, scoring two runs and driving two as well.
Aidan Dunn singled twice and scored twice.
Bridgeport (23-4) plays four games in four days this week, hosting Parkersburg South at 5 p.m. on Monday and Lincoln at 5 p.m. on Thursday, with trips to Robert C. Byrd on Tuesday and Morgantown on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in between.
