City Faces in Different Places

By Michelle Duez on November 02, 2014 from City Faces

Bridgeport has recently been dubbed Title Town due to the success of many sports and academic teams .  As a Bridgeport High School teacher and coach, "Griff"  is part of three of these recent WVSSAC titles. Please take a moment to meet my friend Jon Griffith.

How long have you lived in Bridgeport? Jon has lived in Bridgeport for eighteen years.  He first moved here in 1987 – 1994 and returned in 2005 to present.

Where are you originally from? South Charleston.  He is a 1980 graduate of South Charleston High School.

Are you married? Yes, to Heidi Griffith. Jon and Heidi married in Fairmont in 1995.  Heidi is a 1989 Fairmont Senior graduate and also works for Harrison County Schools.

Children? Four children - Ben, 24, lives in Morgantown; Jonathan, 18, a freshman at WVU; Jacob, 16, a junior at BHS and Marinda, 13, an eighth grader at BMS. Jacob is on the BHS football and track and field teams.  Miranda is on the BMS volleyball team.

What is your favorite color? Red

Where do you work? Jon is the Computer teacher at Bridgeport High School.

Favorite Bridgeport spot? Wayne Jamison Field

Favorite WV spot outside of Bridgeport? Laidley Field, Charleston

Favorite place outside of WV? Deep Creek, Maryland because of its peaceful setting.  His family goes there when they can get away.  It's a bit farther but he also loves Eugene, Oregon. Eugene hosts the US Olympic Track and Field trials.

Favorite restaurant? Muriales in Fairmont

Best childhood memory? Jon remembers time spent at his grandparent’s farm in Sissonville.

Favorite musical group?  Zac Brown Band

Pets? Three cats named Daisy, Pepper and Krystal.

Hobbies? Coaching – Jon coaches the BHS Boys Track and Field team and both BHS Boys and Girls Cross Country. He also has many years of football coaching under his belt.

Interesting fact about you? Jon has been a teacher for twenty-seven years but doesn’t have a teaching degree.  He has a Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry from WVU and a teaching certificate from Fairmont State University.

Coach Griff wouldn't mention this but I would like to add that he is a 1979 WV State Champion in the 4 x 100 representing South Charleston High School.  Also, as a BHS Boys Track and Field coach, he was won 19 straight Big 10 Championships. In the past year, he has coached the Boys Track Team to a 2014 State Championship and the Boys Cross Country team to two back to back Championships in  2013 and 2014.

Congratulations Coach Griff. Bridgeport is lucky to have such a great coach so dedicated to our young student athletes.
