City Faces in Different Places

By Michelle Duez on December 28, 2014 from City Faces

Bridgeport is a very family oriented community.  Amy Funk is no exception when it comes to family and community involvement.  She has a busy career but makes time to support and volunteer in her children's activities.  Please take a moment to meet Amy.

How long have you lived in Bridgeport? Twenty years, lived in Charleston prior to Bridgeport.

Where are you originally from? Amy was raised in Philippi.  She is a 1987 graduate of Phillip Barbour High School.  She graduated with a B.S. and a Master’s Degree in Dental Hygiene in 1992 and 1997, respectively.

Are you married? Yes, it will be 21 years on New Year’s Eve to Fred Funk.  She and Fred met in Charleston.  Fred is a 1975 graduate of Phillip Barbour High School and later graduated from Alderson Broaddus College.  They were married at the Alderson Broaddus Chapel.

Children? Sarah Berryann, 31, lives in Pittsburgh; Danielle, 19, a 2013 graduate of BHS and a sophomore at WVU; and twins Andrew and Jack, 17, juniors at BHS.  Andrew and Jack are both involved with many activities at BHS.  Andrew plays Soccer, is in the Drumline for the Band and runs Track. Jack is on the Science Bowl team, plays in Jazz Band, runs Cross Country, is on the Swim team and runs Track.

What is your favorite color? Green

Where do you work? Amy is the WVU School of Dentistry Director of Undergraduate and Graduate Dental Hygiene Programs.

Favorite Bridgeport spot? Amy loves being at the track at BHS.  She is an avid volunteer and supporter of the Track and Cross Country programs.

Favorite WV spot outside of Bridgeport? If Amy can get away, she loves to go to Canaan.  Regardless of the season, she finds it peaceful and beautiful.  She likes the wide open spaces.

Favorite place outside of WV? Ocracoke, North Carolina is Amy’s favorite vacation get away.  It’s uncrowded stretch of picturesque beaches allow one to fully relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of daily life and distractions.

Favorite restaurant? Howard’s Pub on Ocracoke Island, NC and Julio’s locally.

Best childhood memory?  In her first horse show, at the age of six, Amy won a blue ribbon with a first place performance and was hooked on competing.

Favorite musical group?  Amy enjoys music of all genres.  You can find a variety of music programmed in her car radio at all times.

Pets?  The Funks have two dogs – Charlotte and Dover ; two cats – Sizzle and Pepe; five horses - Zeke, Dixie, Frost, Bo and Izzy and a chinchilla named Jingles.

Hobbies? Horseback riding, being with her family, volunteering with her children’s activities, and cooking are her favorites.

Interesting fact about you?  Amy was on the WVU Equestrian team, she is an avid Redskins fan and once crewed for the Kaleidoscope hot air balloon team out of Charleston.  They traveled all over the east coast.
