City Faces in Different Places

By Michelle Duez on January 11, 2015 from City Faces

Many kids in Bridgeport graduate high school and leave the area but are still are deeply rooted in Bridgeport.  Emma Lane achieved her childhood dream of moving to the big city but she will always have a soft spot for Bridgeport.  Please take a moment to meet my new friend, Emma Lane.

How long have you lived in Bridgeport? Emma was born and raised in Bridgeport.  She is a 2009 BHS graduate.  She also graduated from West Virginia University in 2013 with a B.S. in Environmental and Natural Resource Economics and was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority.  She moved to NYC after she graduated from WVU.

Emma is the daughter of Jack and Julie Lane of Bridgeport.  She has many siblings living in many different places - Maggie is a freshman at BHS, Sarah lives in Fairmont, Dwight in Bridgeport, LeeAnn in Morgantown, Brian in Ohio, Eric and Erin live in Clarksburg, and Laura lives in Pittsburgh.

What is your favorite color? Royal blue, but black is a close second.

Where do you work? Emma works for EcoHealth Alliance, a nonprofit that researches human and environmental health. They track and prevent spread of diseases like MERS, Coronavirus and Ebola in international countries, and work to regulate the wildlife trade. Many people don’t realize that diseases spread primarily through animals, as a reaction of environmental change (deforestation, climate change) and trade, because animals leave their normal habitat and migrate closer to humans.

In addition, she works with the NYC Sigma Kappa Alumnae Chapter as the Collegiate/Alumnae Liaison, where she works closely with alumnae and collegiate members at Rutgers University.

She also assists in marketing, for fun, as a Skimm’bassador for a daily e-newsletter called TheSkimm.  http://www.theskimm.com/?r=37MGG

Favorite Bridgeport spot? Wayne Jamison Field on a Friday night is her favorite place in Bridgeport.  She appreciates the strong sense of  spirit and love for the community.

Favorite WV spot outside of Bridgeport? Cheat Lake and Cooper’s Rock. She finds them both very beautiful regardless of the season.

Favorite place outside of WV? Sedona, Arizona. She finds the red rock to be very captivating and the shopping is unique and welcoming.

Favorite Restaurant? The Wonder Bar for a filet and Twin Oaks for pizza.

Best childhood memory? Being a member of the Student Council at BHS provided many good times for Emma.  She feels high school wouldn’t have been the same without it and appreciated her teacher advisor, Cheryl McCarthy, very much.

Favorite musical group?  Currently, Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift’s 1989 are her favorites.  She frequently listens to Spotify.

Pets? Miniature Poodle, Max,  who lives at home in Bridgeport with her parents.

Hobbies? She loves exploring, whether that’s going on a hike, walking through the city, or trying a new restaurant. She feels that no matter how long you live in one place, you can always explore and learn more about your surroundings.  She is passionate about the environment and likes to get involved with new environmental initiatives and outdoor activities.

Interesting fact about you? Moving to the NYC area wasn’t on a whim. She dreamed of living in the city since high school, so she made it a reality after graduation. She appreciates her supportive family.
