Hite Field Property Auction Nets Bid Exceeding $400K

According to WDTV, Hite Field, the historic stadium property at the center of a months-long dispute between the City of Clarksburg and the Harrison County Board of Education, has drawn a high bid of $401,500 at auction.
The online-only auction for the property at 2 Stadium Dr. ended Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m. Kaufman Realty & Auctions listed the sale as subject to approval.
Under the auction terms, the bidder must sign a purchase agreement and submit a 10% nonrefundable down payment within 48 hours of the auction’s close. The sale will then be submitted for review and approval on Oct. 6.
If approved, the buyer will have 45 days to close, putting the expected closing date at Nov. 22.
A 10% buyer’s premium also applies under the auction terms, bringing the total contract price to $441,650 if the $401,500 bid is approved.
The auction comes after Clarksburg City Council’s effort to acquire Hite Field directly from the school system fell through. Last month, the council submitted an offer of $350,000 for the property, but Mayor Wayne Worth said that offer “didn’t materialize.”
In response, council held a special meeting and unanimously passed a resolution to begin the eminent domain process on the property.
“If it’s developed right, it could be something that will bear fruit for our city of Clarksburg and for everybody in that neighborhood and for everybody in our city for years to come,” Worth said.
The stadium’s bleachers, which had become a safety hazard, were torn down last year. The 100-year-old facility was historically used as an athletic facility connected to the former Washington Irving school property.
The $401,500 bid is not a final sale. The Harrison County Board of Education must still approve the transaction on Oct. 6 before ownership can transfer. If approved, closing is expected by Nov. 22.
