Mahjong Social Coming to Main Street, Bridgeport

Move over, book clubs. The trending game of Mahjong is snowballing in popularity.
Formerly “About You Monograms,” the building located at 106 E Main Street is being transformed into ‘Mahjong Social.” Owner Lisa Lang wanted a place where community members could learn and play the game that combines skill, memory, strategy, and a little luck.
Various skill levels will be accommodated, and Mahjong Social will be a place where teams can show up to play.
Mahjong 101 – a beginner American Mahjong class – will be taught from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tue., Aug. 4 at Mahjong Social. This beginner-friendly class is designed to be fun, social, and stress-free. Come learn the basics, build confidence and get comfortable at the table. No experience is required.
For the cost of $60 per person, two and a half to three hours of instruction and play are included.
First played in China during the mid-to-late 19th century, Mahjong was derived from older Chinese card and domino games. Nearly two centuries later, people are turning to the game as a challenging social opportunity, free from computer and phone screens.
Although the tile game requires complex calculation and rapid decision-making, anyone can learn to play. Participants find stylish mats and colorful tile sets aesthetically pleasing and fun to own.
