In a workmanlike, but dominant fashion, Bridgeport scored seven first half touchdowns, running through, around, and over Grafton for a 49-0 win on senior night at Wayne Jamison Field.
During the running clock shortened second half, Bridgeport's second and third units played Grafton's starters to a stalemate. That helped preserve Bridgeport's first shutout of the season.
The Tribe, now 9-0, extended their winning streak to 23 games.
On offense, the Indians were once again led by Gavin Williams, who had three rushing touchdowns, a 20-yard passing touchdown to Elijah Knight, and finished with 121 yards on seven carries. In addition to catching Williams' touchdown pass, Elijah Knight had two rushing touchdowns and 38 yards on three carries.
Also carrying the load for Bridgeport was senior Landon Gillum with 39 yards on five carries and Carson Baston with 50 yards on eight carries. Senior Kasen Baun had 27 yards on one carry, and Aiden Gorby added 33 yards on two carries.
"Situational football was better. We had a big emphasis on getting off the field on third downs and I thought the kids did a lot better job at that," said BHS Coach Tyler Phares.
As a testament to that, Grafton had just four first downs in the game. The visitors totaled just 30 yards rushing and 67 yards passing for the game.
Once the Grafton game was complete, the page quickly turned and all the talk was about next week's game with Fairmont Senior, who has become the Indians' top rival over the last decade-plus.
Plenty of eyes will be on Wayne Jamison Field next week when the 7-1 Polar Bears, ranked No. 3 in Class AAA, battle the unbeaten and second-ranked Indians. In addition to bragging rights for another year, the winner of next week's game will likely be home throughout the postseason.
In the last 10 years, the team have played 12 times with the Indians winning eight and Fairmont Senior four. The Polar Bears have ended Bridgeport's season in the playoffs once during that time and Fairmont Senior saw its season end in the playoffs last year courtesy of the Indians.
"It's time to go," said Phares.
Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Jamison Field Friday, Oct. 31.
