Change in Game Plan for this Year's Community Food Drive for Shepherd's Corner

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on October 15, 2020

The GFWC Woman's Club of Bridgeport, the Bridgeport Lions Club and the Bridgeport Fire Department hold an annual food drive to stock the shelves at Shepherd’s Corner. Each year, thousands of food items, as well as cleaning and personal care products, are collected and ultimately benefit area residents in need.

This year’s drive is scheduled for Sat., Oct. 24, but it will operate differently. Rather than representatives of host organizations driving around to pick up donations from residents, the residents are asked to participate by bringing non-perishable foods, personal care and cleaning items to one of two designated drop-off locations.

Between the hours of 9 a.m. and noon, volunteers will be stationed at Oliverio’s Ristorante parking lot on Fifth Street and Lions’ Circle at the corner of Philadelphia Avenue and Johnson Avenue (beside Greer Law Office.)

Items can also be taken to Bridgeport Fire Department (131 West Main Street) or Bridgeport Municipal Building (515 West Main Street) Oct. 19-23 between 7:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Some suggested items are:

Non-perishable food items:
  • Baked beans
  • Green beans
  • Corn
  • Peas
  • Spaghetti sauce with meat
  • Pasta
  • Canned pasta meals: spaghetti, ravioli, etc.
  • Canned milk
  • Soup
  • Saltine crackers
  • Tea bags
  • Peanut butter
  • Jelly
  • Canned meats: tuna, chicken, ham, etc.
  • Boxed potatoes
  • Macaroni & cheese
  • Cereal
  • Canned fruits (especially applesauce)
  • Pudding cups and fruit cups
  • Microwaveable foods
  • Cans of food with pull-tab opener

Personal Care Items:
  • Shampoo
  • Bar soap, shower gel or body wash
  • Toothpaste
  • Toothbrushes
  • Deodorant - men's and women's
  • Disposable razors
  • Sanitary napkins or tampons

Other items not covered by food stamps:
  • Laundry detergent
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Toilet tissue

Cash donations will be used to purchase meat, butter, bread and milk.

Check donations can be mailed to Shepherd's Corner, P.O. Box 101, Bridgeport, WV 26330.

Shepherd’s Corner, the GFWC Woman’s Club of Bridgeport, Bridgeport Lions Club and Bridgeport Fire Department appreciate everyone’s participation and generosity, as well as adhering to this year’s collection plan, allowing volunteers and residents to better social distance and stay safe.
