First Responders Pay Respect to Fallen State Trooper Cory Maynard on I-79 Transport to Donate Organs

Editor's Note: For those wondering why traffic on parts of Interstate 79 saw exit and on ramps blocked off briefly around 1:30 p.m. Saturday, it was due to to the transport of the body of State Trooper Sgt. Cory Maynard. Bridgeport was part of the group involved, including Mayor Andy Lang who was part of the group honoring him standing on the bridge crossing the interstate along Route 50. MetroNews reported that police saluted the body of West Virginia State Police Sgt. Cory Maynard Saturday as it was taken to an organ donation facility.
 
Police officers were lined up along Interstate 79 in Clarksburg as a procession of cruisers and an ambulance carrying Maynard’s body passed by.
 
State Police confirmed Saturday that Maynard was an organ donor.
 
“Even in his death, Sergeant Maynard continues to save lives though his selfless sacrifice,” the statement said.
 
Maynard, 37, was shot and killed in the line of duty Friday afternoon near Matewan. Another man, identified Saturday as Benjamin Baldwin, 39, of Matewan, was shot before troopers arrived. He’s in serious but stable condition at a Charleston hospital.

On June 2, 2023, Sergeant C. S. Maynard, Trooper C. K. Johnson, and Trooper J. P. Ziegler responded to 4262 Beech Creek Rd, Matewan, West Virginia, in reference to a reported shooting. 
 
Upon arrival by the West Virginia State Police, the investigation revealed the suspect, Timothy David Kennedy, 29, of Matewan, West Virgnia, shot the victim, Benjamin Adam Baldwin, 39, of Matewan, West Virginia, with a rifle. 
 
Mr. Baldwin was transported to Charleston Area Medical Center for General for treatment.  He is considered in serious but stable condition.
 
The motive for the shooting is unknown, and the investigation remains active and ongoing.

Sergeant Cory Maynard was 37 years old, married and the father of two children ages 13 and 9.
 
Originally from Belfry Kentucky he became a sworn member of the West Virginia State Police on October 9, 2007.
 
Sergeant Maynard was a 15-year veteran and spent those years faithfully and honorably serving his community. Sergeant Maynard was also an organ donor.
 
Even in his death, Sergeant Maynard continues to save lives though his selfless sacrifice.
