The good news relating to Meadowbook Mall in Bridgeport does not appear to be stopping anytime soon.
Although discussed at the Feb. 7 meeting of the Bridgeport Development Authority as a project almost certainly happening, a building permit for a multi-million project had not been filed with the city. According to Bridgeport Community Development Director Andrea Kerr, that scenario has since changed.
A building permit for a massive renovation at DICKS Sporting Goods has been filed. The renovation will total $2.9 million.
“This is essentially a makeover of the entire store. That includes their customer service area, their restrooms, and just about anything at the location,” said Kerr.
For those that do not know, DICK’S Sporting Goods is one of four stand-alone buildings not attached to the main mall. The others are Planet Fitness, Outback Steakhouse, and Gorilla Strength and Fitness.
This comes on the heels of two other major renovations being announced at Meadowbrook Mall. At the same meeting, Mall Property Manager Robin Urquhart announced that American Eagle and Buckle were both planning to do overhauls as well.
Urquhart said American Eagle’s renovation will exceed more than $1 million. She did not know the cost of the one for Buckle as the business had just begun the process.
“It’s amazing. I think it’s a little bit like keeping up with the Jones. The mall looks so fresh and new with Boscov’s and other improvements, and I think other stores see this and want to put their best foot forward,” said Urquhart. “These renovations are wonderful for the shoppers. In a lot of ways this is a band new mall, and it’s still growing and getting better.”
Kerr was also pleased with the news.
“The mall has been a hub for our retail activities for decades,” she said. “Many malls are struggling, and our mall is growing to the point where there is almost no space left for new business. This is just more good news.”
There was no timeline on when the DICK’S renovation project would begin. However, companies usually begin somewhat quickly after submitting plans and then filing a building permit.
According to the Bridgeport Finance Department, DICK'S Sporting Goods opened in May of 2003.
WDS Construction will manage the project. They are based out of Wisconsin and partner frequently with DICK’S Sporting Goods on projects.
