Jon Griffith Files to Run for City of Bridgeport Mayor

Bridgeport City Council member Jon Griffith will not seek a second term on the city’s governing body as a City Councilman. However, he will seek the position of mayor.
The election is June 10, 2025. The election is for the position of mayor and three seats on City Council.
On Monday, Griffith filed for the four-year term of mayor. Current Mayor Andy Lang, who is finishing up his second term, cannot run for a third due to city statute.
“I had a lot of encouragement from members of the community and my own family,” said Griffith on deciding to run. “I wanted to continue to give back to the community of Bridgeport, which has done so much in my three-decades-plus here in support of my career.
“Since I’ve retired and have been on Council, I feel like I can contribute significantly to Council,” he continued. “I would like to be able to continue that into the future and continue to assist in the city’s growth.”
Griffith is known by many for his career in the education arena that spans decades. In 2021 he announced his retirement from coaching the boys track program after 32 years and cross country program for more than a decade. He also coached freshman football for a number of years.
The native of Charleston, who grew up in South Charleston, who retired in 2020 teaching role at BHS. He taught multiple subjects, including computer courses and multiple classes on the science front.
Griffith has a bachelor’s degree in chemistry from West Virginia University. He returned to Fairmont State College after that to earn a teaching certificate that set the stage for his teaching and coaching career.
The 62-year-old is married to Heidi Griffith. They are the parents of Ben, Jonathan, Jacob, and Marinda.
Griffith was inducted this year into the Bridgeport High School Hall of Fame. He is also on The Bridge Advisory Committee Chairman, serves and to Board of Directors for the Hotsinpiller Foundation, and is involved in multiple other groups.
Along with the seat of mayor being up, Griffith’s seat is up as well. Also, the election will feature two other seats in John Wilson and Jason Campbell that will be up.
Filing fee to run is $25 and due at the time of filing. The filing period began Monday, Jan. 13. Candidates have until 4 p.m. on March 10 to file, which is 90 days from the start of the filing period.
