Little League State Champs to be Honored at Tonight's Council Meeting; Trick or Treat Time and Date to be Finalized

By Chris Johnson on September 25, 2023

Tonight's City Council meeting will be a busy one for awards and presentations highlighted by the Bridgeport Little League 10-12-year-old all-stars being reconginzed for winning the state championship over the summer.

Bridgeport defeated Martinsburg, 10-2, in the state title game and advanced to the Southeast Regional in Warner Robbins, Georgia.
“I always enjoy it when we have the kids there and we get to recognize them,” Mayor Andy Lang said.

Two proclomations will also be read tonight. One will be in recognition of October being Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the other will be to recognize the week of Sept. 25-29 as West Virginia Association of Retired School Employees Week.

City residents will likely be able to start finalizing Halloween plans as Council will look to set the time and date for Trick or Treat this year at tonight's meeting.

The proposed time and date is 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 31 so if passed by City Council, Trick or Treat will actually be on Halloween this fall in Bridgeport.

Only one other new business item is on the agenda as Council will consider and act on approving the water purchase agreement with the Clarksburg Water Board.

“It’s a standard agreement that so many years has to be updated,” Bridgeport Mayor Andy Lang said. “Clarksburg Water Board sells water to several communities and I’m sure they have an agreement with every community and it establishes terms and conditions for that.

“The Bridgeport Utility Board, we just approved it (Thursday morning), PSC approves it, then it’s passed on up to Council to approve it. It’s standard operating procedure.”

The City’s Director of Safety, Shawn Newbrough, will provide Council with a department report.

Lang and Mark Rogers will give reports by the mayor and city manager, respectively.

As always, citizens are welcome to speak to Council during the alloted time set aside for public comment.

Pastor Sean Wegener from Simpson Creek Baptist Church is scheduled to provide the invocation, which will be followed by the Plede of Allegiance.

Prior to the start of tonight's regular meeting, there will be a 6 p.m. work session conducted in executive session. The regular meeting will start at 7 p.m.
