Multiple Bridgeport, Harrison County Students Earn a Cut of Nearly $300,000 in Scholarships through YCF

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on June 09, 2024

Your Community Foundation of North Central West Virginia, Inc. (YCF) is pleased to announce 106 scholarships totaling $293,900 have been awarded for the 2024-2025 academic year. Applications were evaluated by scholarship committees with over 100 volunteers from across North Central West Virginia.

YCF currently manages over 40 scholarship funds. New scholarship endowments may be established with a minimum donation of $20,000, which donors may pledge over three years. The principal is invested, and the earnings provide scholarship dollars – forever. Donors may suggest award criteria and choose a name for the fund. Scholarship endowments are often named in honor or memory of a loved one.

The following scholarships made inaugural awards this year (Scholarship winners from Harrison County are bolded):

Nathan Cunningham Memorial Scholarship provides an award to a graduating senior of Doddridge County High School. Recipients must be enrolled in a post-secondary degree program at any vocational, technical, two-year, or four-year institution in West Virginia. Applicants are required to submit an essay reflecting on a time they felt most alive. The inaugural recipient is Haley Lynch of Doddridge County High School.

Demetry Walker Memorial Scholarship provides an award to a graduating senior who is a West Virginia resident. Recipients must be enrolled in a part-time or full-time educational community program leading to a professional certification in nursing or other caregiving fields. Applicants are required to be in good academic standing and demonstrate financial need. The inaugural recipient is Cheyenne Batton of Lincoln High School.

“We are grateful for the generosity of our donors, and the commitment of our scholarship committee volunteers who donate their time to review applications and recommend scholarship recipients,” said YCF President Patty Showers Ryan. “Their thoughtful contribution makes higher education more accessible to students in our community.”
