Pending Council Approval, Hundreds of Thousands of Dollars in City Street Asphalt Paving Ready to Begin

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on May 23, 2024

Four contractors submitted bids on Bridgeport’s 2024 asphalt paving project and saw those bids opened and publicly read Tuesday, May 21, in City Council Chambers.

The low bidder, and the contractor that will be recommended to Bridgeport, is Bear Contracting. Bear is based out of Bridgeport.

An optional pre-bid meeting was held for contractors on Tuesday, May 7.

Bear’s bid was for $288,985.20. According to Jake Griffith with Bridgeport Engineering, the streets scheduled as part of this year’s program will be able to be paved with the bid that was received.

Parts, or all, of seven streets are included in this year’s list. The project will be covered by levy funds voted on by Bridgeport residents as well as dollars from the city’s general fund, City Engineer Beth Fox said.

Griffith said there will be roughly 8,500 linear feet of roadway to see asphalt paving as planned.

The following are the roads on this year’s schedule.
  • Millbrook Rd. (From Gateway Ave to Johnson Ave)
  • Gordon St (All)
  • First St (All)
  • Conifer Dr (From 14-55 Conifer Dr)
  • Olive St (From Broadway Ave to Willis Ave)
  • Stout St (From Olive St to Pearcy Ave)
  • Pennsylvania Ave (From Lawman Ave to Summit St)
The process in selecting the roads annually has remained the same. Bridgeport has a maintenance schedule for paving all city roads, which can vary based on condition.

Others that bid on the project included JF Allen Co. ($358,086.40), Anderson Excavating, LLC ($328,701.86), Parrotta Paving ($300,756.50), Mountaineer Contractors ($354,994.00), Wolfe’s Excavating ($441,118.12), and Doss Enterprises ($396,369.50).
