Still Time for Fall Road Trip to See Arguably Greatest West Virginia Pumpkin Display and Perhaps Nation

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on October 30, 2024

Editor's Note: Although it is quite a road trip, there is still a few days left to see arguably the greatest displays of pumpkins in the state and perhaps the nation at the Kenova Pumpkin House. Our friends at Only in Your State have a story about it. Take a read and if you have some miles you want to travel for any reason, this may be that reason. Photos shown are courtesy of John Halterman.

FROM ONLYINYOURSTATE.COM

"To me, nothing says fall more than..." How would you finish that statement? Pumpkin spice. Apple cider. Red, orange, and yellow leaves. Crisp mornings. Harvest. There are so many wonderful things to do in West Virginia when fall rolls around, whether you wait all year for the arrival of the season or you begrudgingly accept the cooler temperatures. Regardless of how you feel about autumn, one delightful tradition keeps putting smiles on the faces of all who stop by -- and you'll want to check it out for yourself. This Kenova pumpkin house is nothing short of fascinating.

When it comes to classic fall traditions, we've got quite a few here exceptions to enjoy in West Virginia, ranging from seasonal food flavors to exciting festivals to mountain drives to yard decorations.

Another great fall tradition in West Virginia? Pumpkin houses. Or, rather, one pumpkin house in particular. The amazing Kenova Pumpkin House, to be precise.

Although you can find many houses around the state (and the nation) with pumpkins dotting the front porch, you can only find one house in the state (and the nation) with 3,000 pumpkins arranged beautifully on its porch.

Yes, you read that correctly: there are 3,000 pumpkins on the porch of this home on Beech Street in the town of Kenova. Every fall since 1978 (except for the year 2020, when the event was canceled), the Griffiths of Kenova's Griffith and Theil Soda Fountain host this massive event. To pull it all off, hundreds of Halloween-loving volunteers come together to carve pumpkins.
