Off the Shelf: New Club Set to Start in February and is Open to All Ages at the Bridgeport Public Library

By Sharon Saye on January 26, 2022 from Off the Shelf

Have you ever wanted to learn how to play chess?

The library is a great place to start! Not only do we have dozens of strategy books, guidebooks, and general chess books for adults and children, but we are also starting a brand-new club that will meet every Tuesday from 3 to 5 p.m. starting Feb. 1. The All-Ages Chess Club is for beginners who want to learn the basics as well as seasoned players. All skill levels are welcome!

As the name suggests, the club is open to all ages from young children to older adults. We will be providing casual play games and some competitive games as well. We have four chessboards and two chess clocks available, allowing us to set up two boards for beginners interested in learning the basics and use the other two boards for those players looking to polish their skills and enjoy some good-natured competition.

Learning chess may seem daunting at first, but it only takes a bit of time to learn the rules. The main things you need to know are how the pieces move and when to checkmate. Advanced strategy and skill come with time and a lot of practice, so just have fun with it! There are some great advantages to gain from learning and playing chess including increased attention span, increased memory capacity, improved cognitive skills, elevated creativity, and many more. Even if you know nothing about the game, we encourage you to come out and give it a try!

The All-Ages Chess Club will meet at the long tables in the middle of the library (if you need help finding these please ask a staff member at either of the desks.) Feel free to drop by the library any time during the club’s meeting time for a quick game or two. We look forward to meeting fellow chess enthusiasts!
