Off the Shelf: With Best Book of the Year Lists Already Out, a Look at Some Recommended Reading

By Sharon Saye on August 14, 2019 from Off the Shelf

It was bad enough in June when Amazon and other media outlets were busy providing their Best Books of the Year So Far lists, but now everyone is getting into the act.  December is not that far away, folks.  Yet who am I to disagree, so, here are some more books that are being recommended.

The Book Charmer” by   Karen Hawkins   has a librarian as a heroine.  Sarah has a special gift: books speak to her.  And they have told her that Grace, the new town clerk is vital to the future of Dove Pond.  Grace has moved to the town after the death of her sister to take care of her niece and her grandmother.  Her niece is very unhappy feeling abandoned and her grandmother is suffering from early onset dementia.
Grace plans to stay only one year and doesn’t want to get involved, but Sarah maneuvers her into chairing the Great Apple Festival.
This is a charming, light story full of nice people trying to do their best for their families, friends and their towns.

“The Night Tiger” by Yangsze Choo involves an apprentice dressmaker, and an eleven-year-old houseboy trying to fulfill his former master’s dying wish.  “Daisy Jones & The Six” by Taylor Jenkins Reid is a perfect book for the baby boomer as it follows a young girl growing up in the late sixties with ambitions to be a rock star.

“Normal People” by Sally Rooney follows two teenagers whose chance meeting evolves into something special, but something that they are both determined to conceal.

“The Huntress” by Kate Quinn is a World War II thriller about a fearless woman pilot; when she becomes stranded behind enemy lines, she must combat a Nazi assassin known as the Huntress.  “The Only Woman in the Room” by Marie Benedict tells the story of a beautiful woman who is also brilliant; when she learns of the real plans of the Third Reich while at her husband’s side, an Austrian arms dealer, she comes up with an incredible plan.

“Black Leopard, Red Wolf” by Marlon James is a fantasy novel using African legends for its inspiration as a hunter known as Tracker is hired to find a mysterious boy who vanished three years before.

2019 has been a great year for books, and there are loads scheduled for fall publication.  So, readers might want to get a head start because the final best books of 2019 lists are going to be pretty full.
