BHS Cheerleaders Honored for Class AAA State Title by City Council

By Chris Johnson on January 12, 2022

The Bridgeport High School cheer team was recognized with a proclamation during Monday's City Council meeting for winning the Class AAA state championship.

The Indians captured the AAA title on Dec. 11 at the Cam Henderson Center on the Marshall University campus in Huntington. It marks the second title in three years for the program as BHS won the Class AA state championship in 2019.

The members of this year’s squad consist of seniors Lauran Johnston, Jade Nguyen, Lilly Strait, and Gyllian Wagner. The juniors for the squad are Abigail Davis, Brynna Greathouse, Sallyanna Hamrick, Andie McCall, and Lexi Wilkinson.

This year's sophomores, which is a small group, are Gianna Felosa and Alea Matthis. A large group of freshmen consist of Neveah Brinkley, Jasa Garvin, Ava Kretchmar, Riley Lanza, Lilly Lopez, Olivia Poling, and Mackenzie Reider.

The proclamation was read by Mayor Andy Lang.

"They are the ones that did the work," BHS coach Natalie Hathaway said. "We're just really proud of them. It was a great year."
