Bridgeport Maintains Top Spot in Class AAA Portion of MetroNews Weekly High School Football Rankings

By Connect-Bridgeport Staff on September 30, 2024

Bridgeport maintained its top spot in Class AAA in the latest edition of the MetroNews High School Football Power Rankings.

The Indians received 13 of the 20 first place votes as casted by sports journalists across West Virginia. BHS did lose a little ground as last week it had 14 first place votes and this week it has 13. Fairmont Senior, ranked second in Class AAA, picked up the first-place vote.

On Friday, the Tribe moved to 5-0 with a 58-0 win against Robert C. Byrd. The Polar Bears handled University by a 49-7 score.

The Indians will look to move to 6-0 this week when they host Brooke. Fairmont Senior will visit Buckhannon-Upshur. Brooke, 1-4, is coming off its first win of the season against Lincoln County.

No other BHS foes are ranked in the Class AAA top 10. Future foe Preston is listed in the “receiving votes” portion of the standings. Class AAAA Morgantown, who BHS beat in week two, is ranked ninth in the big-school classification.

The MetroNews poll is a media poll and has no barring on who makes the 16-team field in each classification and where they are seeded. The WVSSAC poll, which is computer-based, makes those projections. That poll is released after 2 p.m. each Tuesday.

Martinsburg maintined the top spot in Class AAAA. In Class AAA, Big 10 member North Marion is ranked No. 8. and Elkins is in the "receiving votes" portion. Williamstown is tops in Class AA, while South Harrison checks in at No. 7 and Big 10 member Philip Barbour comes in at No. 10.
