First-Ever MMA Event at The Bridge Proves a Success

By Jeff Toquinto on June 02, 2023

Officials with The Bridge Sports Complex have consistently promised to look at providing unique events for the Citynet Center as well as their outdoor facilities. Last month, that became true.

According to Bridgeport City Manager Brian Newton, a first-of-its-kind event took place inside the Citynet Center. And Newton was in attendance. On Saturday, May 13, the “Brawl at The Bridge” was held, which was a Mixed Martial Arts event hosted by New Line Cagefighting out of Lexington, Ky.

Bridge Assistant General Manager Chase Robey said there was a capacity crowd of more than 600 people will all reserved seating sold out. He also said a majority of the tickets for the event were sold well before the event took place.

“It was a really strong showing for the first time we hosted such an event,” said Robey. “Anytime you do something for the first time you worry about things, such as logistics, lighting, and music; but the crowd was into it, and you could tell they were entertained with a new event.”

Newton said it was the first time he had ever attended an MMA event. He was surprised by what he saw.

“The biggest thing that impressed me was it was a family and club event. I can’t tell you the number of family members that were there to watch a son, a daughter, a father all compete,” said Newton. “I was also oblivious to the fact that this was a club sport with every corner of the building having people cheering them on. You’d see people cheering from the stands and then you would see them a little while later competing. Everyone was very respectful.

“Granted, this is not something I would do or have my kids to do, but the competition was impressive,” he continued. “There also was no trouble. It went well.”

Robey backed the assessment that things went well. He said the Citynet Center at The Bridge is looking to host two more events through New Line Cagefighting in 2024. He said they are planning to have an event in the fall and the spring. If the events come to fruition, they already have one ticket sold.

“I will be attending,” Newton said.
